Yes, Sam Spade, Joel Cairo, Gutman, the Femme Fatale, “the Kid,” and that ebony raptor all come to life at Renaissance Theatre on their Alpha Stage!  It’s the first official stage adaptation of the story that spawned the hardboiled detective novel, that sparked the Film Noir movement, and which still speaks to us all through its provocative banter, its double- and triple-crosses, and its streetwise “detective speak”—all giving a gripping reality to crime fiction.  Be there as this living, breathing pulp magazine reaches out from the shadows to take audiences by the throat!

Life may not be easy, but it is beautiful in this tale of young love in Paris. Ever since its first performances Puccini’s La Bohème has been adored.

A chance meeting by winter's bright moonlight, a street-side café and the artists’ garret – they all come alive through Puccini’s music, which delicately captures love at first sight, youthful exuberance and the sorrow of loss. This really is musical storytelling at its best.

Our feature presentation is based on the work, which was later made into a cult movie of the same name, featuring Humphrey Bogart and has been made into a play.

The Maltese Falcon was written from experience - Dashiell Hammett spent several years as a Pinkerton detective. He was a superlative mystery writer. With this book, he ushered in a whole new genre of classical crime fiction. Colored with keen observations of the corruption and violence permeating American life, Hammett's economical, suspenseful, hardboiled style is still a model for today's typical detective novel.

Andre' Gide summarizes The Maltese Falcon's plot as one "in which every character is trying to deceive all the others and in which the truth slowly becomes visible through the haze of deception." Filled with slang, violence, sex, and misogyny, the novel is also touched with incredible pathos and with stark glimpses into the street's sleazier - and lonelier - side.
