A small selection of our past shows! Page under
construction, all links may not yet or for that matter ever work
correctly! Sorry!

Although we opened in late 1998, we didn't have a performance
until February/March of 1999. We opened with two alternating
productions, Tennessee Williams play The Glass Menagerie rotated
with the original production of Altar Boy. Ars Nova actually
performed an opera Christmas of 1998.

The Renaissance Theatre summer 2000 production of Paul
Rudnick's "Jeffrey" continues to live on in the hearts and
minds of those whose lives it touched. This show has meant
many things to many people, especially to those fortunate
enough to have taken part in the magic of transforming a
vision into a reality. Here then are a few
"behind-the-scenes" glimpses of what was, and still is, a
very personal experience for the cast and crew.
"Jeffrey" was written by Paul Rudnick and directed at
Huntsville's Renaissance Theatre by Gary Lee Knight. Many
thanks goes to Renaissance's Artistic Director Bob Baker for
his invaluable help and support during the production.
ALMOST DOROTHY
A Renaissance Theatre
Original World Premiere
by Robert Riddle Baker |
Starring:
Anna Blair
Brian Wilson
Elizabeth Scott
Heather Bond
Beth Norwood
Daniel Weldon
Neal Vardaman
Dale Worley |
Almost Dorothy, a new comedy-drama by Renaissance
Theatre's Artistic Director, Robert Riddle Baker,
ran June 21st through July 1st. The show starred
Anna Blair and Brian Wilson, and featured Elizabeth
Scott, Beth Norwood, Heather Bond, Dale Worley, and
two newcomers to the Huntsville community theater
stage, Daniel Weldon and Neal Vardaman.
Anna Blair played the part of Virginia Tate, an old
woman living in Hollywood in a slightly run down
condo who tells her gay neighbor Chip (played by
Brian Wilson) that she was almost a big star until
she had a baby out of wedlock. She's slightly daffy
and off kilter with the ravages of old age and Chip,
who looks after her, just goes along with her
stories, not really caring if they are true or not,
as he has his own problems to deal with and sort
out.
The action of the play is set in the early 90's and
told in flashback style, returning the audience to
the late 30's where we meet a young Virginia Tate on
the cusp of being a star and being vigorously
groomed by the studio system.
One of the interesting features of this play, other
than the unique story line, is that one of the
characters (Beth Norwood) who played young Virginia,
ends up playing her mother and her daughter, as the
scenes unfold and Virginia grows older. Ms. Scott
also played triple roles, that of being Virginia
Tate's mother in 1938, then playing Virginia at
various ages as we move through the play. The story
progresses as Marty Bowers (Worley) visits Chip; he
is working on a book about "What Ever Happened To"
and wants to gather information concerning Virginia
Tate.
Neal Vardaman played the Hollywood producer Max, a
married man who is also Virginia's haunting love
interest, and whose relationship with the young star
changes her life forever. Daniel Weldon played Karl
Biddle, a former lover of Chips'.
The set design and dressing for "Almost Dorothy" was
done by Bob Baker, technical director was Gary Lee
Knight, wigs and hair were done by Lee Hicklen and
Johnny Clements, and lighting was done by Loren
Bacon, who, along with Brian Wilson, designed the
sound.

FIRST ONE HUNDRED YEARS
BY EMILY MANN

Born in 1889 and 1891
respectively, real-life sisters "Queen Bessie" and "Sweet Sadie"
Delaney, daughters of a black Episcopal minister, experienced
the Jim Crow era in the post-Civil War South, Harlem's Golden
Age, and the Civil Rights Movement first-hand. In this stage
adaptation of their poignant and personal best-selling memoirs
from 1993, the plain-spoken sisters share with us their honesty
and humor in a history lesson for the
heart. Directed by Gary Lee Knight and featuring Sherri Smith

Trilogy, was chosen to proceed to the American
Association of Community Theaters Region 10
competition held at the Southeastern Theatre
Conference. A monetary award of $800.00 was
given to Renaissance Theatre in congratulations.
In 2000, Renaissance Theatre represented the
state with the wildly popular production of

competition’s Best Production, Best Supporting

commendations for acting and direction.

In 2001, Renaissance’s production of
Master Class by Terrence McNally
proceeded to the Southeastern Conference, and
once again Renaissance Theatre performed well to
place third overall at the conference and

Widows and Children First
will compete against ten other productions in
the largest region in the United States.
Productions will be adjudicated based on the
overall production quality, choice of material
and the modification of the material for the
allotted time limit. The acting, direction and
technical aspects of the production will be
scrutinized and critiqued.

The Southeastern Theatre Conference will be held
March 6-10, 2002 in Mobile, Alabama. ACTS joins
Huntsville and arts organizations throughout the
state in wishing Renaissance Theatre the best of
luck!

Perky’s Crown of Beauty, Tanning & Karaoke Salon and the Beaverbrook Community Theater Presents: Another Christmas Carol (Rated PG12 or 13?)
By Robert Riddle Baker

Somewhere in North Alabama, early one recent December......
Those Beaverbrook actors are up to raising more money for their financially strapped little theater, after the disastrous robbery and loss of all their fund raising money just after their startling production of Romeo and Juliet closed......and with the holidays approaching, what better vehicle than to do what almost every community theater always does at the yuletide season to make a fast buck; a complete production of Dickens's A Christmas Carol...but this won't be like any that you may have ever sat through or for that matter enjoyed.
After strenuous auditions and rehearsals, Maxine has been cast in the role of Scrooge. Mamma Gert (her mind has gone to that special place, again) is Mrs. Cratchet, Bobo has gone to Nashville and his identical twin sister Barbara pops in to take on the role of Christmas Past-Present. A big role for a big lady! In Bobo's absence, Big Bobby is taking on the role of Mr. Cratchet. There will be carolers, street urchins and those terrible rag pickers. Charlie Sumpter (still running for mayor and kissing everything he can to do it) will be Marley. Wilda Jean (still getting a divorce from that worthless woman chasing husband) and her new baby Ethan Alan will also appear...........
More fun than a table full of line dancing turkeys and suitable for ALMOST the whole family! (PG12 or 13)
Featuring: Karen Lynn, John Harris, Percy Littleton, Patty James, Tanya Miller, Jackie Mason, Daniel Yearta, Tina Parker, Cheri Furno, Emily Furno, Daniel James, Christine James, Wayne Miller, Kathy Tichow, Wayne Miller, Michael Tichow plus a rare and unusual appearance by the playwrite Bob Baker. Music by Joni Boulet, costumes by Gay Broad and Bob Baker, directed by Bob Baker.

A musical fantasy
and one of Broadways
longest running
shows ever!
But it is
not to
old-time
Italian
stagecraft
alone that
the show
pays
homage. As
with its
Gallic
source
material,
the story is
a light
parody of
Romeo and
Juliet,
with
lashings of
the Bard
evinced
through its
verse,
prose,
soliloquies,
and dramatic
couplets.
The
ingredients
are simple:
a boy (Sam
Neely), a
girl (Cherie
Evans), two
fathers (Jim
Zieliński
and Craig
Reinhart),
and a
wall…its
stage, a
basic
platform,
its scenery,
a tattered
cardboard
moon. As a
sort of
reflection
of
Our Town,
a narrator
(Darrin
Windham)
spins the
simple tale,
aided by an
onstage
property man
(Daniel
Yearta) who,
giving a nod
to the muse
of oriental
theatre is,
for all
purposes,
“invisible.”
An old actor
(Ron Harris)
and his
sidekick
(Robbie
Shafer) echo
the
rude
mechanicals
of
A Midsummer
Night’s
Dream,
assisting in
a plot to
bring the
two
ostensibly
feuding
families
together via
“betrothal
by proxy.”

The

Patsy's famous tunes

Cline is considered
by many to be the

Her songs often

Written by Connie Ray, conceived by Alan Bailey with musical Arrangements by Mike Craver. Directed by Lyndy Werpy
It's October, 1945, and the gospel-singing Sanders Family is back together again. The war is over and America's years of prosperity are just beginning. But there's another kind of rite of passage at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church, where Reverent Mervin Oglethorpe is giving his last service. He's been called to preach in Texas, and he's already bought a ten-gallon hat and is preparing to ride into the sunset with his wife June, who is eight months pregnant. The next morning, young Dennis Sanders takes over as Mount Pleasant's pastor. Join the Sanders Family as they send Mervin and June off in style, with hilarious and touching stories and twenty-five toe-tapping Bluegrass Gospel favorites. First time produced in Huntsville, Alabama! Great Seasoned Cast!
Lucas Kiker, Kelly Lynn, Ronni Bell, Molly Lynn, John Abbott, Dominick Desta, Tanja Miller, Musical Direction by Joni Boulet, Crew: Wayne Miller.
