the Book of Liz” Main Stage Jan 9, 10, 15, 16, 17

The Book of Liz

For years Elizabeth Donderstock (Leslie Bofill) has been feeling unappreciated. While her cheese balls have been the pride of the Squeamish, the elders refuse to let her organize “The Chastity Parade.” These feelings are only magnified by the stern and ever-devout sermons of the Reverend Tollhouse (Phil Parker) and the constant reprimands she receives from her fellow Squeamish community members Sister Butterworth (Kim Parker) and Brother Hesikiah (Micah Hoder). The sudden arrival of a young go-getter from a neighboring Squeamish Community makes matters worse when Brother Brightbee (Jake Barrow) seeks to seize control of the production of the cheese balls. Shunned by the Squeamish Community, Liz decides to set aside her plain upbringing, the work, the beards, the furniture, and the cheese balls to a make a place for herself in the big, scary world outside of Cluster Haven.

On the outside Liz is faced with seemingly insurmountable challenges which time and again she overcomes.  The real world is a threatening place where llamas are not allowed in employee parking places, peanuts are deported for parking tickets, floor length dresses are replaced by toast-colored mini-skirts, and people she comes to care for leave for a glamorous life in the Quad Cities. Through her travels she encounters a number of bizarre and heart-warming characters that are all a far cry from the plain upbringing of which she is accustomed. In the end Liz seems to have it all, and receives an offer to run the Plymouth Crock Restaurant, a local hot-spot for recovering alcoholics, but once again she is faced with not only a challenge, but an enormous choice.

Rounding out the cast are a number of local celebrities; Kevin O’Brien, Amanda Lund, Caroline Prince, Jeff White, Joanna Broad, Jason Graham, Tommy Walker, Kristen Barnhill, Will Erwin, Clayton Westrope, and Rava Stapp.

Amy and David Sedaris “The Talent Family” have written a clever and charming piece that is always hilarious and frequently touching. Amy is most commonly recognized for her character Jerri Blank on Strangers with Candy, David for his novels Naked, Me Talk Pretty One Day, and The Santaland Diaries.  The result of their collaboration is quite possibly one of the most hysterical plays to hit the stage in a number of years.

Directed by Samantha Musto and Assistant Directed by Liz Graham with Creative Consulting from Mark Moore, The Book of Liz promises to be one of the most memorable evenings of theatre you will enjoy this year and is not to be missed. Take a break from the depression that accompanies the fact that you have re-appropriated your funds for the holidays, and soak in the luxurious lather of cultures that are nothing like your own.  The Book of Liz opens on January 9th  with performances on the 10th, 15th, 16th, and 17th @ 8pm.  It also features a “pay what you can” performance on January 8th . Call 536-3117 to reserve tickets.
